2nd Annual Chef's Night: Courses and Horses

Last year’s first annual Chef’s Night – Horses and Courses was hailed as “the most exciting social event in the Woodstock area for many years.” Over 40 restaurants and beverage participants presented samples of their culinary finest. Guests included people from all over the Upper Valley and GMHA members from near and far.

The Second Annual Chef’s Night will be held on August 18 from 5:00 to 7:30 at the GMHA facility on route 106 in South Woodstock. Most of last year’s food and beverage providers are returning this year to join new providers, who after hearing of last year’s success, are vying to join in.

This year’s equestrian entertainment will be a DerbyCross competition, which has been called the “next great horse sport.”  Typically, DerbyCross is a team competition that combines the speed and accuracy of show jumping with the bravery and endurance of cross-country jumping.  Here at GMHA, for the first time ever – carriage drivers will join in on the fun.

GMHA’s new breed of competition will consist of four teams, each with 4 equestrians.  There will be 1 professional event rider, 1 young event rider, 1 driver with a single horse, and 1 driver with a pair.  The riders will navigate a course combining stadium and cross country fences.  The drivers will navigate a course following a similar track.  Their challenges will involve sets of cones with tennis balls on top and two sets of solid obstacles called hazards.  Penalties will be awarded for knockdowns (jump rails for riders, tennis balls for drivers), deviation of course, refusals, and runouts.  The team with the fastest combined time will win.  This exhibition will illustrate the parallels between the sports of Combined Driving and Eventing, and provide some terrific entertainment for our guests.

Patrons can view the DerbyCross competition from the Chef’s Tent while sampling some of the finest epicurean delights in the Upper Valley. Whether horse enthusiasts or not, guests can enjoy the elegance, beauty athleticism, agility and bravery of the animals combined with the skill of the riders and drivers.
