Volunteer Opportunities at GMHA

Support your sport
Volunteers are critical to the success of the Green Mountain Horse
Association. In 2007, dedicated volunteers donated over 3,500 hours of their time
to help out at GMHA.
Volunteers help make GMHA what it is!
Working events, painting fences, stuffing mailings,
and helping with office work - our members, competitors, and friends commit
their valuable free time to helping us out. Volunteering is a great way
to meet new people, watch some lovely rides, learn from judges, and just
enjoy a fun day around horses.
Experienced volunteers as well as those brand-new
to horses are welcome. There are appropriate jobs for all ages and abilities.
What’s the best job for me at a GMHA event?
- Timer: Want a close-up view of the action and comfortable with a stopwatch?
Be a timer for jumping, driving, or trail events!
- Hospitality: A great
way to meet people and explore the grounds while providing refreshments
to volunteers and officials. Must have a valid driver’s license.
- Scribe: A fantastic learning opportunity! Must be able to write legibly
and quickly to record judge’s comments.
- Pulse & Respirations (Competitive Trail & Driving
only): Want to be up close and personal with the competing horses? Take
and record results of pulse and respirations to help ensure the safety
of all.
- Scoring: Good with numbers? Record and calculate scores and results.
- Hazards Judges (Combined Driving Event only): Records faults/ time for
each competitor at a hazard. Uses a radio to communicate with show officials.
A front row seat for the most exciting marathon phase. Like fence
judging for the driving enthusiast.
- Gate Stewards: Are you people person? Here’s a way
to interact with competitors and keep the show running on time.
- Cones Crew: Tailor the cones course to each individual carriage. Fun and
easy exercise.
- Runners: Bring your bike or take a hike! A good way to see all aspects
of the event as you bring in score sheets.
- Fence Judges (Eventing only): One of our
most popular positions! Record jump penalties and
communicate by radio with show officials.
- Jump Crew: Pick up rails and make minor course
adjustments while watching the action!
- Awards: Coordinate trophies and ribbons and
congratulate competitors.
Busy competing? How about these mid-week GMHA jobs?
Not available on weekends but want to get involved? Besides volunteering at
our events, there are many tasks we could use your help with around GMHA. Consider
these options!
- Gardening: Green thumbs wanted! GMHA maintains its decorative flowers
and shrubs all show season~ and we could use your help!
- Painting: Help keep our cross-country and stadium jumps looking fresh and
new!
- GMHA Magazine: Authors wanted! We need contributors for our quarterly magazine.
Any and all article or column ideas are welcome.
- Office: The GMHA office gets particularly busy right before our big events,
but there are projects (especially for the computer literate) throughout the
season.
- Other special skills you think might help us out? Let us know!
Download Volunteer Form, or
email GMHA.
Please tell us when you are available and anything else we should know when
assigning tasks.
Thanks for your help!
